What is the one most important thing that every Christian should do?
Jesus Visits Martha and Mary
As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a village where a woman named Martha welcomed them into her home. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
This story of Mary and Martha is such a great reminder of what is most important in life. All too often we can get caught up with what seems to be the necessary things of life and we forget about what is really the most important thing, listening to God! Maybe if we stopped and listened to God more often we would be less busy in life. How many times have you spent much of your time doing certain things that turned out not to be necessary at all.
Sometimes we are so busy in our tasks that we don’t even recognize the people that are all around us. Maybe we start our mornings rehearsing the agenda of the day and forget to say to the people around us, good morning, how are you? And sincerely wait for an answer and respond to it.
Maybe, just maybe, we are anxious and busy with too many things in life. Why don’t you choose something better. Why don’t you stop, maybe even sit down, and listen
to what the Lord is saying.
